HSH Prince Albert II of Monaco will attend the conference

Prince Albert II will give the closing speech of the morning sessions on the opening day of IPY Oslo Science Conference.
Prince Albert II has been a great supporter of polar science and the International Polar Year. He was the Guest of Honour at the official IPY opening ceremony in Paris 1st of March 2007. The Monegasque head of state has made several polar journeys, both to Antarctica and the Arctic. As the UNEP Champion of the Earth, Prince Albert II went on a month-long expedition to Antarctica in January 2009, to assess the impact of global warming on the South Pole.
"This is one of the most sensitive regions in the world," Prince Albert said. "Everything happening at the South Pole, like the North Pole, has repercussions everywhere on the planet."
The Prince's South Pole itinerary included visits to scientific outposts and meetings with climate change experts from 18 countries to get an overview of the latest research. He visited a range of scientific stations including the US research bases at Patriot Hill and Amundsen-Scott, the French-Italian base Concordia, Russia's Vostok and Novolazarevskaya, Australia's Davis station, the Belgian base Princess Elisabeth and Norway's Troll.
Prince Albert II builds on a longstanding legacy of the Princely House, dating back to his great great grandfather Prince Albert Ist. As a young man, Prince Albert Ist began to develop an interest in the then relatively new science of oceanography. After several years of study, Albert showed his ingenuity by devising a number of techniques and instruments used for measurement and exploration. Accompanied by some of the world's leading marine scientists, he recorded numerous oceanographic studies, maps and charts. Albert I ascended the throne of Monaco in 1889 and died in 1922.
In 1898, Prince Albert Ist decided that the summer campaign of his new yacht, the second Princesse-Alice, would take place in the North Polar regions, to carry out a zoological and physicochemical exploratory examination of this oceanic sector. He visited Svalbard i 1906 and 1907 as part of a series of Arctic expeditions that the Prince financed and participated in.
His Serene Highness Prince Albert Alexandre Louis Pierre, the present Prince of Monaco, was born on March 14th, 1958. His Highness is the son of Prince Rainier III and Princess Grace Patricia Kelly. In April 2005, Prince Rainier III died and Hereditary Prince Albert became Albert II, Sovereign Prince of Monaco. Since acceding to the throne, the Prince has made environmental awareness a key goal of his principality. In 2006 of HSH Prince Albert created a Foundation whose purpose is to protect the environment and to encourage sustainable development. He has thrown his support behind a wide range of causes, including the IPY.
