PolarCINEMA committee very satisfied with the turnout
- We got altogether 81 correct submissions before the deadline 15th of February. That leaves us enough material for more than 40 hours on the screen, says PolarCINEMA coordinator Mare Pit. She and the committee are overwhelmed by the response.
- The most amazing outcome is that two out of three are actually IPY films, says Pit.- We got films from 17 different countries, 19 from the USA, 15 from Canada, 9 from South Africa and 8 from Norway
During the conference the PolarCINEMA will run in parallel with the science sessions. There will be a full cinema programme for the duration of the conference.
In a couple of weeks 6 juries around the globe will be screening and rating the submissions. The entrants will be informed about the result, and the committee hope that some of producers will be present to present their films in Oslo. The PolarCINEMA will show the films that are getting high rating from the juries. In addition there will be presentations and discussions in connection with some films. Awards will be distributed for best film in various categories.

Statistics are shown below. The submissions are almost totally dominated by documentary films. 73/81 films (90%) fall into that category. Only 1 drama and 7 experimental/art films were submitted.
I term of formats there are a bit more variation: 31 longer feature films, 3 animated films, but as many as 41/81 entries (50%) are short/news reports.
- It is quite an achievement that we got 10 amateur films and 15 student productions. But 56/81 (70 %) films are produced by professionals, says Pit. A couple was produced by "Professionals, volunteers, students, community members"
As many as 20 films were produced for television and most of them have been shown on public TV. 14 were meant for film theatres. But the most important channels seams to be the internet (24) and classroom/educational/museums or conference/community use (26).
In order to supplement the submissions, the committee will invite a few outstanding polar films. The PolarCINEMA coordinator, Mare Pit, is ready to receive proposals from those of you who are likely to make up the PolarCINEMA audience in June.
