Invitations out for the PolarTEACHERS conference

Last week 120 teachers and educators from 20 countries were invited to attend the IPY-OSC 2010 conference. The PolarTEACHERS programme includes a two days workshop ahead of the science conference.
The introductory part of PolarTEACHERS will take place at The University of Oslo June 6 and June 7. Teachers will attend the full science conference and meet regularly during the week to share their experiences and ideas. The applicants for this programme submitted altogether 180 abstracts for the EOC sessions in the IPY-OSV programme.
The target group has been teachers and educators worldwide including pre-service teachers. The committee received altogether 270 abstracts and applications - from 240 applicants.
- It seams that many have ticked the box for teacher/educator without knowing that it meant to apply for the PolarTEACHERs Conference. The main reason why some countries have few or none approved participants is that all the applicants are researchers employed at a university, says Karl Thorstein Hetland, coordinator of the PolarTEACHERS programme, commenting on the detailedstatisics below.
Conditions for selected participants
The generous offer to participants include reduced registration fee of EURO 245 (full registration fee is EURO 490) and free accomodation in Oslo. Invited participants who accept will get a password they use in order to register for the conference with a reduced fee. Participants who will have travel costs exceeding 1500 USD, can be considered for an additional travel grant.
The fee covers the PolarTEACHERS conference, the full science conference and accommodation from Saturday June 5 until Saturday June 12. The fee also covers two dinners as well as breakfast and lunch from Sunday to Saturday. Participants will also receive a copy of the new IPY resource book "Polar Science and Global Climate".
Statistics:
Hetland tells us that the committee has admitted about 80 teachers, teaching students up to the age of 18-19, and 40 educators. - We have strictly followed the criteria and invited active teachers, last year students from teacher colleges, persons that are teaching in teachers training programmes and others with a great potential for outreach through schools, says Karl Thorstein Hetland.
The criteria for selection were:
• Quality of the abstract for EOC session or the implementation plan for use of polar science in an educational setting
• Geographic distribution of participants
• Different educator categories
The committee had a difficult task picking the participants, but has ended up with 120 persons getting the offer.
