PolarCINEMA ready to receive polar films and TV-documentaries
The PolarCINEMA in Oslo 8-12 June 2010 will showcase and celebrate productions that are inspired by, and increase the awareness of the Polar Regions. We invite all filmmakers, reporters, scientist and educators to send in their polar productions and be part of this inspiring festival.
During the International Polar Year 2007-2008 film proved a strong instrument to explore new frontiers of polar science and mesmerized and informed the public. Fiction films, documentaries, TV-series and Internet broadcasts; they all helped translate polar science to the screen, portrayed a rich history of exploration, culture and contemporary life and investigated peoples' and natures' response and adaptation to a changing climate.

Mare Pit, coordinator of the Polar Cinema- In Oslo it is time to celebrate this rich legacy created by professionals and amateurs looking for new and innovative ways to get the message across, says Mare Pit, Executive officer at the IASC secretariat in Potsdam. She is coordinating the PolarCINEMA, together with a very skilled committee. - The PolarCINEMA is going to be a mixture of screenings, debates and open discussions with makers, educators, scientists and the public on the success and impact of the medium in increasing our understanding of the Arctic and Antarctic and their relation to the rest of the globe.
The PolarCINEMA will run in parallel with the science sessions during the IPY-Oslo Science Conference. The venue for the film festival and the conference is Norway Trade Fair. In addition to the conference participants, an audience of media students and others with an interest for film will be invited.
The PolarCINEMA Festival is open to all Polar Regions relevant productions with a release date after January 1st 2007Ø: IPY productions (produced as part of IPY or presenting an IPY project) as well as non-IPY polar productions.
Entries can include everything from a full night art film to brief TV-reportage produced for news broadcast or science magazines. The only format accepted for selection is DVD. Films in English do not require translation. Film in other languages must be subtitled in English.
The registration process is to be completed online. After completion of the entry form, a screening copy, a biography and filmography of the director and a full cast and credit list of the production must be sent to the IPY-OSC secretariat.
- We to include a running competition in the program and put up awards to honor productions that enlarged the public understanding of the Arctic and Antarctic and successfully visualized the critical role of the Polar Regions in global processes, says Mare Pit. The awards, criteria and a list of the professional jury members will be published on the website.
