Committees ready to start working
Any day now the various science committees will take up their tasks and start to develop the scientific programme for the IPY Oslo Science Conference. More than 100 session proposals, submitted by the IPY community, are on the table.
Asgeir Knudsen joined the IPY-OSC secretariat in December, as coordinator. He will act as liaison between the external PCO (Professional Congress Organiser) and the secretariat based at the Research Council of Norway. - My first assignment has been to recruit the Science Committee and its five subcommittees from a candidate's shortlist agreed upon in the Steering Committee last November. Most candidates have responded positively. We are still awaiting responses from a few, says Knudsen.
The committee members are now published at the conference website. Look under "Organisation" above for lists of committee members and contact details.
The Science Committees will continue to build the programme bottom up. All session proposals will be evaluated, placed within a theme, coordinated and supplemented. When the programme grid is laid, conveners and co-conveners will be appointed by the Science Committee before participants are invited to submit their abstracts.
- We are now removing the session proposals submission form from the website, but we still invite and will consider proposals for social or outreach and education activities during the conference, says Asgeir Knudsen. In particular he wants to receive advice about which institutions and businesses to invite to the Expo, and get requests for excursions before and after the conference week.
The EOC Committee (Education, outreach and communication) was appointed last November and have already started to prepare the EOC-programme. The committee will meet in Geneva 23rd and 24th of February ahead of the IPY celebrations on the 25th. A fair portion of the proposals submitted are EOC-related.
The next Steering Committee meeting is planned in conjunction with the Arctic Science Summit Week in Bergen 28th of March. A 2nd Circular can be expected in May or June.
