The Norwegian Prime Minister to Visit Antarctica in January

In January, Norwegian Prime Minister Jens Stoltenberg will visit Antarctica. Together with a large assemply of Norwegian and international press, he is headed for the Norwegian research station Troll on January 19, the same date as the great Norwegian/ American research expedition (the Antarctic Traverse) is expectetd to reach the South Pole.

The Prime Minister will stop off at the Norwegian research station Troll. The visit is a joint arrangement between the PMs office and the International Polar Year-secretariat.

In preparation for- and during the trip the press will be introduced to both Norwegian and international research activities in Antarctica that are coordinated under The International Polar Year.

Climate is a major theme for the visit, and particularly Norwegian interests in Antarctica and polar research - especially the Norwegian-American research expedition from Troll to the South Pole, which has the aim of searching the eastern sector of the continent and the effect of climate change on the area.

Stoltenberg travels to Cape Town by plane on January 16 and heads for Troll on the evening of the 18th. He plans to stop over at the Troll station for two days and will return to Cape Town on the evening of January 20

Major Role
Norway plays a prominent role during International Polar Year 2007-2008, not least by virtue of its dynamic research communities linked to an extensive international network, as well as its excellent facilities and logistical support in both the Arctic and Antarctic. By allocating NOK 330 million over four years, Norway is also one of the largest financial contributers to the initiative.
