Keep track of IPY in Google Earth

Google - ingress (Ingressbilde)

You can now keep track of the IPY-acitivities on Google Earth by downloading a particular layer. The information included in the layer will be developed and updated throughout the IPY period.

Download the IPY layer now. (Requires the Google Earth application. If you don't already have Google Earth on your computer, download Google Earth now)

Google Earth is a fantastic tool for studying the polar regions and demonstrating science in action.  They are a new way of conducting earth science, facilitating logistics, and communicating the process to the public.

During the course of IPY it will be possible to follow polar animals as they fly around the Antarctic, swim through the Oceans, or migrate around the Arctic. You will also be able to follow ships carrying scientists around the poles, see photos and videos from their journey, and download data in almost real-time.

The tool can also be used for visualising satellite data that are used to probe the polar regions.  In fact, we believe that every research project in IPY can somehow be represented geospatially - from almost stationary GPS stations in the Antarctic to community outreach projects in the Arctic.

So far the layer is dominated by the US activities under the logo of National Science Foundation. But useful information about the international projects and IPY history is included. Currently, you can take a tour that gives an overview of IPY and of the 240 or so endorsed IPY projects, and get a good idea of who, what, when and where for IPY research.

The international project office have promised to make sure the IPY layer for Google Earth will evolve as the projects do. For IPY participants keen to share their data, the IPO will also guide them through the process of developing and integrating their data with the layer. Please contact Rhian Salmon if you'd like to get involved.
